The RUC is continuing its investigation into a house fire in Belfast that claimed the lives of a man and his teenage daughter. Initial indications suggested the fire had been started deliberately, said a spokesman.

The fire happened on Monday but police only released details of the incident yesterday.

The result of post-mortems on Mr David Gillespie (37) and his daughter, Tracey (16), were pending last night. Both bodies were recovered in a bedroom in the house on Parkgate Avenue in east Belfast.

A woman who also lived in the house was not at home at the time of the incident. It is believed the family had only lived in the area for a few years.

Mr Sam McIntyre, the fire service divisional commander, said there was no smoke alarm installed in the house.

The incident brings the number of people that have been killed in house fires in Northern Ireland to 23 so far this year.
