"Father Ted" ordained Kilkenny's high priest

"Ted Heads" are the obsessive fans of the hit Channel 4 sit com Father Ted.

"Ted Heads" are the obsessive fans of the hit Channel 4 sit com Father Ted.

They ran riot over the weekend at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs comedy festival where the show's star, Ardal O'Hanlon, had to sign a million autographs and pose for an equal mount of photos to satisfy their demands.

As the pubs around Kilkenny showed hours upon hours of Father Ted re runs and even minor characters in the show were stopped in the street, it has emerged that the President, Mrs Robinson, might herself be a Ted Head as she has requested a meeting with the show's writers, Arthur Matthews and Graham Linehan, during her visit to London this week.

Matthews and Linehan, who won a BAFTA award earlier this year for their work on Father Ted, say that they are "very happy" to meet the President and also disclosed that there will be a third series of the comedy but that it will not be screened until well into next year.

In the meantime they have just written a one hour Father Ted special which will be broadcast next Christmas.

Of all the well known names appearing at the festival (Eddie Izzard, Sean Hughes, Bill Murray) it came as somewhat of a surprise to the organisers that Ardal O'Hanlon's show was the quickest to sell out.

Such was the demand for tickets that O'Hanlon had to add an extra show yesterday.

Very much the man of the moment, there is a chance to see this top class comic in action in Dublin tonight where he performs at a charity gig in Whelan's of Wexford Street at 8 p.m.

All the money raised from the show goes directly to the Dublin Aids Alliance.
