DENVER - Defence lawyers in the Oklahoma City bombing trial yesterday attacked FBI crime lab procedures for collecting evidence, hammering on a theme they hope will undermine the government's case against Mr Timothy McVeigh.

The defence attorney, Mr Christopher Tritico, tried unsuccessfully to get an FBI agent, Mr David Williams, who has been criticised for his role in the investigation, to admit that evidence from the truck the prosecution alleges was used in the bombing was found not by investigators but by an ordinary citizen.

The defence has been sharply critical of the way the FBI handled the evidence and yesterday it got Mr Williams to admit there was no single person in charge of evidence collection at the scene, suggesting the evidence against Mr McVeigh could be unreliable.
