The electoral pact formed two years ago between the Fianna Fail and Progressive Democrats members of Galway Corporation held firm last night as Cllr Donal Lyons was elected mayor of the city.Cllr Lyons, a 44-year-old native of Ballyrush, Co Sligo, takes over from Cllr Martin Quinn of Fianna Fail. He is the second PD mayor in the current arrangement between the two parties, who have nine of the 15 seats on the city council.Cllr Lyons defeated Labour's Alderman Catherine Connolly by 11-3 for the position, with Fine Gael's Cllr John Mulholland and Senator Fintan Coogan voting for him. Deputy Padraic McCormack voted for Alderman Connolly, while the fourth FG member, Cllr Angela Lupton, was absent.
