In the final county council election in the State, which took place in Roscommon town, Fianna Fáil took three of the five seats available, with the remaining two going to Fine Gael and an Independent candidate.
The election for the Mid Roscommon electoral area had been postponed for one week after the death of sitting Fine Gael councillor Mr Gerry Donnelly, whose wife Ms Teresa Donnelly ran in his place but failed to get elected.
In a tight contest, it was not until the sixth count that Fine Gael's Mr Dominic Connolly and Independent Ms Paula McNamara were elected, leaving four Fianna Fáil candidates in contention for the three remaining seats. On the seventh count Ms Orla Leyden, Mr Martin Connaughton, and Mr Paddy Kilduff finished ahead of Mr Des Bruen, who was eliminated. The three were elected without having reached the quota.
Ms McNamara is the second person elected as a Hospital Action Committee (HAC) candidate for Co Roscommon, along with Ms Valerie Byrne, who was elected in the Strokestown area. The surprise packet of the election was Independent Mr Luke Ming Flanagan, who was elected after topping the poll in the Castlerea area.
Overall, the new county council for Roscommon will be made up of 10 Fine Gael, nine Fianna Fáil, six Independents and one Sinn Féin member. Fine Gael is expected to take control of the council. An alliance with some Independents or the Sinn Féin member is considered the most likely scenario.
