Gardai are investigating serious financial irregularities which have arisen in Limerick County Council.
The council in a brief statement yesterday, said the irregularities had been identified in a particular department.
The irregularities are under investigation and the assistance of the Garda authorities has been requested, said the statement.
While the actual amount involved is not known, it is understood to be somewhere in the region of £40,000 to £50,000.
