It may be because people are at home nursing their heads and wallets after the Christmas holidays, but no major delays on travel routes are anticipated over the weekend. Fingers crossed.

However, traffic is expected to be heavy on the main arteries from late afternoon onwards.

In Dublin the AA warn that traffic lights on the Ballycullen Road at Firhouse Road are facing the wrong way. Surprisingly, traffic on the M50 is reported to be moving well while in the city centre traffic is also reported to be light.

In Cork, drivers are warned that Liberty Street has been reversed to operate one-way from Courthouse Street to North Main Street.

In other travel news there will be no DART or Commuter weekend services between Pearse Street station and Greystones station due to DART upgrade works.

Dublin Bus has increased fares on all journeys by five cent. Motorists are advised that both the Eastlink Tollbridge and the Westlink Tollbridge have increased their charges. A car at the Eastlink now costs €1.35 and a car at the Westlink costs €1.50. The Drogheda Tollbridge has also increased its price to €1.60.

All ferries are running on time so far, however Met Éireann has issued a gale warning on all Irish coastal waters and passengers are advised to contact the company they are sailing with.

In sport there are a couple of rugby games taking place this weekend. Leinster entertain Sale at Lansdowne Road tonight, while Ulster play Leicester at Ravenhill in the European Cup on Sunday. There is also horse racing at Navan on Saturday and Leopardstown on Sunday.

In terms of the weather, it will be cold and very windy Saturday night and Sunday. Heavy and thundery showers have been forecast over the western half of the country on Saturday, but these will later clear to give sunny spells.
