WASTE to Energy Ltd, the company which was recently refused planning permission for a healthcare waste incinerator in Ringsend, Dublin, has informed local politicians, residents and other objectors that it has changed its plans, writes Frank McDonald, Environment Correspondent.
The company, which ran into strong opposition over the earlier proposal, said it would now be proposing "non incineration technology" for the disposal of healthcare waste, based on the latest developments in the US. It is understood this would involve chemical treatment.
This was explained at a meeting with the objectors last week, when the company's managing director, Mr Des Rogers, sought an assurance that they would not oppose the latest scheme. But they said Ringsend had more than its fair share of "dirty industry".
They also referred to the controversial history of Waste to Energy's predecessor, Bio Burn Ltd, in running an incinerator at Hanover Quay, in the Grand Canal Docks. This facility, which generated complaints from local residents, has since been closed down.
It also emerged that Waste to Energy Ltd had merely an option on the site on Pigeon House Road where the incinerator was to be built.
