Four firms are considering becoming national sponsors of John Player Tops, the amateur variety entertainment competition. In Carlow's Dolmen Hotel on Saturday, the future of Tops was considered by delegates from eight centres around the State. The need for sponsorship has arisen over the withdrawal of the tobacco company, John Player & Sons, after 34 years as national sponsor.Mr Niall O'Flynn, national co-ordinator for Tops, said he would know within about a month whether a new national sponsor has been found.
