A crewman from a French-registered fishing trawler was last night airlifted to Kerry General Hospital in Tralee after sustaining minor injuries in an accident on board his vessel.

The man was injured in an incident yesterday evening when the vessel was some 240km off the south west coast.

The Valentia Coast Guard helicopter, responding to a request for assistance from the French authorities, arrived at the scene some time before 10.30pm.

A Coastguard spokeswoman said the man had been treated for minor injuries to his hand and was waiting to be discharged.
