BRITAIN:  Five men arrested in a series of anti-terror raids in the south east of England last week were last night charged with terrorist offences, Scotland Yard said.

Two other men, also arrested during the raids, were released on bail pending further inquiries.

More than 700 police officers were involved in the operation, which came as half a ton of ammonium nitrate fertiliser was seized from a west London self-storage unit.

Meanwhile, French police evacuated several thousands of passengers from the Paris urban rail network yesterday in a bomb alert that followed a tip-off by a CIA agent in Spain, French authorities said.

The hour-long alert was lifted after searches along the RER A line, one of the main rail lines linking the French capital with its suburbs, turned up nothing suspicious.
