Five people have died in a tour boat accident on Europe's largest subterranean lake, Seegrotte, near Vienna, a fire official has said.

A German tour group was aboard the boat today when the accident occurred, the official said.

The Austrian news agency APA said the boat capsized carrying 33 people including the captain. The rest of the passengers were rescued, it said.

Around a quarter of a million people visit Seegrotte at Hinterbruehl in northeast Austria every year, according the Seegrotte website.
