A box of gunpowder has exploded inside a military warehouse near Nicaragua's capital, killing five soldiers and critically wounding five others.

A group of soldiers were carrying gunpowder from a warehouse on the grounds of the Andres Castro sergeant's training school when one of the boxes suddenly exploded.

The first explosion triggered a series of subsequent explosions and fires that eventually ignited boxes filed with smaller ammunition.

Soldiers later removed surviving stores of gunpowder and ammunition from the warehouse in order to prevent more explosions.

Military officials are unsure what caused the initial explosion and are still investigating the incident.
