Five people have been killed in a series of incidents on the country's roads in the past day.

Two people were killed in a crash in Co Roscommon early this morning. The two - a 50-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man - were in a car that was involved with a collision with another at Tulsk at around 12.30 a.m.

They were named today as Martin Connor, from Eden and Kilclare, Mantua, Castlerea, Co Roscommon and Teresa Smyth, from Corrolough, Williamstown, Co Galway.

The driver of the second vehicle was released from hospital this morning after treatment for minor injuries.

Gardaí are also investigating a fatal crash at Stranolar, Co Donegal, which happened at around midnight. A 21-year-old man was killed in the single-vehicle incident, in which a second man was injured.

A woman was killed when the car she was driving struck a tree at Plodstown, Mullingar at 4.15 a.m. She was Irene Grall, (25) from  Milltown, Oldcastle, Co Meath. There were no other vehicles involved.

Meanwhile, a man in his late 30s or early 40s was killed when he was hit by a car as he was crossing the road at Drough, Kilcrickle, Loughrea, Co Galway yesterday afternoon.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and removed to Portiuncula Hospital.

The dead man has been named as Rory Gallagher from St Bridgets Crescent, Drumkeen, Co Donegal.
