A transatlantic flight was forced to divert to Shannon Airport yesterday after a passenger began bleeding during the journey.

Air Berlin flight BER-7248 was en route from Berlin to New York’s JFK airport and had just crossed the Irish coast north of Drogheda when cabin crew were alerted to a passenger apparently bleeding profusely.

Airport crash crews were placed on standby as a precaution.

The Airbus A330-200 jet touched down safely at 3.15pm. The passenger was brought by ambulance to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Fire crews remained with the jet while it was refuelled with its passengers still on board. The flight continued its journey about two hours after landing.
