There has been an improvement in road conditions as the day has progressed but there is still a lot of flooding in the North West and through Leinster.

Motorists are being advised to test brakes after driving through water, to double braking distance and to slow down.

There is excess surface water on the M4 between Maynooth and Leixlip and on the Clane to Leixlip road.

The N3 Dublin to Cavan road is closed due to flooding near Killygarry Church just outside Cavan and a number of local roads in the county remain impassable. There is flooding on the N16 Sligo/Manorhamilton Road at Glencar.

Spot flooding has been reported on the N68 Roscommon-Galway Road between Athleague and Ballygar, and on the Carrick Road between Boyle and Carrickmore. There is excess surface water on the road between Freshford and Kilkenny.

Extra care is needed on the M9 between Kilkenny and  Mullinavat and on the N63 at Kilashee. There is flooding on the N72 Mallow to Fermoy road east of Fermoy and Lixnaw Cross road remains impassable outside Tralee.

Met Éireann said showers will continue for a time tonight before starting to clear from the east. However the stormy, unsettled conditions are expected to last until the weekend and temperatures will fall. A severe frost is expected on Thursday night..
