Two human foetuses in glass bottles were found by a man digging his garden in Whitehead, Co Antrim, yesterday. Pathologists were immediately called and the remains taken away for examination.

A police spokesman later confirmed that the RUC believed the foetuses were medical specimens. However, he could offer no explanation as to why they were buried in the garden.

"We believe these were samples of the type used by medical students. The only question is why someone chose to bury them in a garden. But we are not treating this as suspicious in any way."
