A former national and Olympic swimming coach has been convicted of 35 offences relating to the sexual assault of five young boys.

Gerard Doyle (48), originally from Wexford town, was found guilty of 34 charges of indecent assault and one charge of sexual assault at Wexford Circuit Court today.

Doyle had denied the offences on five boys aged between 10 and 15 years of age at New Ross swimming pool between 1981 and 1993.

But the jury of seven men and five women returned guilty verdicts today after a six-day trial.

Judge Alice Doyle remanded Doyle, who had been part of the Irish coaching team at the Athens Olympics in 2004, in custody until January for sentencing.
