A woman and three men were rescued by emergency services from the River Suir in Waterford city yesterday, writes Ciaran Murphy.
Gardaí responded to reports that a number of people were in difficulty in the river close to the Edmund Rice Bridge in the city centre at 4.55pm.
Waterford City Fire Service trucks, ambulances and the Waterford Coastguard helicopter also attended the scene.
The Irish Coastguard helicopter, based at Waterford Regional Airport, located a woman in the water.
A punt was located nearby and piloted by a firefighter to the location where the woman, reported to be in her mid-to-late thirties, was found in an unconscious state.
She was taken into the boat and resuscitated by a garda as she was taken to the shore. Two men were then rescued, while a third man was later helped from the river.
One of the men is understood to be local, while another was said to be English. The third man is believed to be a Polish national.
A spokeswoman for the HSE said last night that all of those who had been rescued were in a stable condition.
