Four men accused of conspiring to make pipe bombs were granted bail today after an Old Bailey judge heard that the main prosecution witness had lied to police.

Mr Michael O'Kane prosecuting said the evidence against the four 'does not at present support the realistic prospect of conviction' and that no proven links with terrorist organistations have been discovered.

The defendants Mr Alan McGovern, (31), Patrick Dunne, (29), Patrick Gallagher, (45) and Robert Lee, (45), reacted with jubiliation as the judge granted them their freedom.

The four category A prisoners at the high security Belmarsh jail in Woolwich, London are expected to be released later today.

The defendants embraced each other in the dock and put their arms in the air in a victory salute after Judge Richard Hawkins QC granted them bail.

The case will be listed again at the Old Bailey on April 24th when charges against the four are expected to be dropped.

The defendants were arrested in a dawn raid by police officers on February 1st last in Ealing, West London.
