A 34-year-old Meath man lost his life in a traffic crash yesterday morning. Simon Walton, Hazelwood, Ballivor, was the only occupant of a car that went out of control and crashed at Clonygrange, Ballivor, on the Mullingar Road, at 7am.

Yesterday evening, a man was fatally injured when struck by a train on the railway line between Millstreet, Co Cork, and Rathmore, Co Kerry. Gardaí and the emergency services were called to the scene of the incident at about 4.25pm. The line was closed for a time.

A Co Monaghan man was drowned at an apartment complex in the Canary Islands on Sunday. Brendan O'Reilly (23), Annalitten, near Castleblaney, got into difficulty while swimming.

He had travelled to the resort on Friday with friends Glen Comiskey and John Duffey, both from Co Monaghan. They were joined by locals in efforts to revive him.

However, family sources said yesterday Mr O'Reilly failed to regain consciousness and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

A noted GAA enthusiast, he was a leading member of the local Toome club. Mr O'Reilly was due to celebrate his 24th birthday in October. He was a member of a well known Co Monaghan business family.

His parents, Patrick and Kay O'Reilly, and his brother, Damien, were being comforted by friends yesterday.

A 30-year-old Wicklow man was killed at the weekend following an accident at a national water-ski competition in Kildare.

The man, from just outside Ashford, had been taking part in the Irish National Championships on Sunday afternoon at Golden Falls Water-Ski Club in Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare.

He was performing a jump at about 4.15pm when he was reported to have hit the water at an acute angle rendering him unconscious. He was transported to Naas hospital, where he died a short time later.
