Four killed in road accidents during holiday weekend

Four people have died as a result of traffic accidents in the Republic during the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The latest fatality occurred in Co Monaghan early yesterday morning. A 19-year-old man died after the car in which he was travelling crashed into a bridge at Corcaghan, Co Monaghan. He has been named as Mr Gordon Elliot, of Cavanagarvan, Corcaghan, Monaghan.

The accident happened at about 2.55 a.m. yesterday. The victim was taken to Cavan General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Gardaí at Monaghan station are investigating the accident. There was no other vehicle involved.

On Sunday a man died in Co Carlow after his motorcycle collided with a car at Downings, Tullow, at about 2.30 p.m. He has been named as Mr Peter Whelan (47), of Fernhill, Arklow, Co Wicklow.

On Saturday night, shortly before midnight, Ms Rosemary Kavanagh (49), from Pineridge in Wexford, died after a head-on-collision between two cars at Ballinamuckla, Loughrea, Co Galway.

On Saturday at about 10.30 a.m., Mr Tommy Healy (57), of Two-Mile-Borris, Co Tipperary, died after a two-car collision at Colleshall, five miles from Kilkenny city.

The death toll compares to six deaths over the May Bank Holiday weekend last year.

This weekend's deaths bring the total killed on the Republic's roads this year to 128.
