Crystal Palace manager Trevor Francis is facing an FA investigation after claims he hit one of his players.

Former England striker Francis was sitting in the dugout during his side's home league match with Bradford on Tuesday evening when he allegedly hit out at his substitute goalkeeper, Alex Kolinko.

Francis was ordered off the pitch during his side's 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park after apparently being angered when he heard the Latvian keeper laughing just after Palace had fallen behind to Andy Todd's 76th-minute goal.

Francis, English football's first million pound player when he moved from Birmingham to Nottingham Forest back in 1979, said his reaction was "a bit of fun".

But fourth official Neil Perkin alerted referee Paul Armstrong who in turn sent Francis into the stands.

And a statement on the FA's website today read: "Further to an alleged incident during Crystal Palace's home game with Bradford City on Tuesday, the FA have received reports from the referee and fourth official concerning the conduct of Palace manager Trevor Francis.

"Mr Francis is alleged to have assaulted Palace substitute goalkeeper Alex Kolinko. It is understood Kolinko has made a formal complaint to the police on this matter.

"We can now confirm tha investigating the incident following the officials' reports."

Meanwhile, a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police force said: "We are investigating an allegation of common assault in connection with an incident at Crystal Palace's ground on Tuesday."

He explained police would not be formally interviewing anyone but acting as "mediators" between the two sides in an attempt to resolve the issue.

However, Palace chairman Simon Jordan described the incident was a "storm in a teacup" and that the club would not punish Francis.
