Fionola Meredith picks six of the best places to go in Belfast - without charge
Magnum Ireland
Belfast's turn to get a look at the work of this international co-operative of independent photographers. Of special interest will be Erich Lessing's vintage black and white prints of workers in the Harland and Wolff shipyard(see right), and Chris Steele-Perkin's pictures of funeral-goers fleeing a gun attack in Milltown cemetery in 1988. Showing at the Ormeau Baths Gallery, Ormeau Avenue until September 16th.
Making mummy masks
There are storytelling sessions on Tuesdays at the Ulster Museum for children aged three to seven, while older kids can get busy making "mummy masks" or golden necklaces on Thursdays. It's also a good opportunity to take a last look around the old galleries, since the museum is closing for two years at the end of August for major building and redevelopment work. Until August 27th, for more details see www.ulstermuseum.org.uk
Art at the boundaries
Located at an interface area in north Belfast, the Golden Thread Gallery aims to provide a neutral space for contemporary visual art. GT Active is part of the gallery's outreach programme, showcasing a range of artworks representing the Ardoyne and Shankill areas, produced by residents. Running until September 2nd at the Golden Thread Gallery, at Brookfield Mill, 333 Crumlin Road.
Square Sundays
Grab a rug and head down to Custom House Square at 2pm or 4pm on Sundays, where Belfast Community Circus School is laying on family-friendly international street theatre until the end of the month.
Don't miss the last show, Skate Naked on August 27th - crazy acrobatics with two funny guys, dressed only in diamante studded leather thongs.
Linen Hall by the glass
An opportunity to find out more about the Linen Hall, the oldest library in Belfast. Call the Belfast Welcome Centre on 028 9024 6609 to take part in one of the conducted tours of this wonderful old building and its books. There's a chance to do a spot of wine tasting too.
