The ending of the blockade by the French fishermen of the ports of Calais, Boulogne and Dunkirk may be only temporary, a spokesman of the Irish Road Haulage Association said yesterday.

Mr Jimmy Quinn said the association was ready to initiate a legal challenge against the French government seeking compensation for the losses suffered by its members.

The fishermen are objecting to an EU directive to use more loosely woven fishing nets which, the fishermen say, would reduce their catches. Mr Quinn said the fishermen had abandoned their blockade of the ports for as long as they were in discussions with the French Ministry of Agriculture.
