The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today announced five closure orders and one improvement orders were served on businesses during September for breaches of food safety legislation.
Closure orders were served under the FSAI Act 1998 on the Centra supermarket (closed area: rear yard, lean-to and rear dry goods store), Lord Edward Street, Kilmallock, Limerick, and Scoby's restaurant, Main Street, Hospital, Limerick
Elsewhere, closure orders were served under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010 on Eastern Tandoori restaurant, 1-2 Emmet Place, Cork; Rene Cusack fishmonger (closed area: ground floor, fish retail, storage and preparation areas, upstairs staff facilities), The Market, Ennis, Clare; and Paddy Jack food stall (closed area: processing unit), Cuffsboro, Ballacolla, Laois.
An improvement order was served on Eurospar supermarket, Skerries Point Shopping Centre, Skerries, Co Dublin.
FSAI chief executive Prof Alan Reilly said: "The legal onus is on food businesses to be responsible and ensure that the food they serve is safe to eat in accordance with the legislation. . . . Of particular disappointment is the ongoing number of cases involving improper storage of foodstuffs and poor cleaning and sanitising."
Under the FSAI Act, 1998, a closure order is made where it is deemed that there is or there is likely to be a grave and immediate danger to public health at or in the premises; or where an improvement order is not complied with. Closure orders can refer to the immediate closure of all or part of the food premises, or all or some of its activities.
Closure orders and prohibition orders are served where there is a non-compliance with food legislation.
