Lima - Peru's embattled President Alberto Fujimori will resign today while on a trip to Japan, leaving his deputy likely to lead a transitional government until elections in April, the Prime Minister, Mr Federico Salas, has said.
He said the President would present his resignation letter today, as "he does not want to be a destabilising factor for the upcoming elections". Mr Salas was speaking on CPN radio.
The Vice-President, Mr Ricardo Marquez said he would be willing to step into Mr Fujimori's place to lead a transition government.
