Funding for additional gardai in rural Ireland should be included in tomorrow's Budget, according to the president of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association, Mr Frank Allen.
Mr Allen said: "The two most prevalent scourges in rural Ireland today are attacks on people living in isolated areas and a sharp increase in the availability of drugs in villages and towns.
Mr Allen said extra gardai were necessary to "combat these two evils".
