A man being held on remand in the LVF wing of the Maze Prison on a murder charge has been refused compassionate leave for his father's funeral. A Crown lawyer told a bail hearing yesterday that it was feared that "there might be some sort of trouble" if LVF members attended the funeral and if the accused man was there.

The application was refused by Mr Justice Campbell in Belfast High Court yesterday on behalf of Mr Norman James Coopey (27), from Bryansford Road, Newcastle, Co Down, who is charged with murdering James Morgan (16) last July.
