Around 2,000 people attended the funeral yesterday of Monsignor Dominick Grealy. He was the former vicar general of the Archdiocese of Tuam and had been parish priest of Knock for the past 16 years.
Msg Grealy (78) became chairman of Knock airport after the death of Msg James Horan. He played a significant part in the expansion of the airport and was a former chairman of the board of the recently renamed Ireland West Airport Knock.
He played a leading role in the development of Knock shrine. Msg Grealy was buried in the grounds of Knock Basilica, beside his predecessor, Msg Horan.
The main celebrant of the funeral Mass was the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary. He was assisted by the retired archbishop of Tuam, Dr Joseph Cassidy; the Bishop of Achonry, Dr Thomas Flynn; the Bishop of Killala, Dr John Fleming; and the Bishop of Galway, Dr Martin Brennan.
President Mary McAleese was represented by her aide-de-camp Comdt Lester Costello. Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was represented by his aide-de-camp Comdt Michael Murray.
