Gary Douch, who was murdered earlier this month in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin, was buried in his native north Dublin yesterday.

There was a large attendance at Our Lady's Church, Darndale, for the funeral Mass, which was celebrated by parish priest Fr Terry Murray. Fr Murray told mourners there was a sense of shock in the community at his death.

"The nature of his death was appalling. We have to ask the Minister for Justice why it was allowed happen," he said. "We acknowledge that, as a result of his murder, conditions in Mountjoy will never be the same again."

Mr Douch's body was taken from the church to Fingal Cemetery in a horse-drawn carriage. The chief mourners were his parents, Alfie and Maggie Douch, and other members of the family.
