There has been a delay in setting up the registration system for the septic tank charge, the Department of Environment confirmed yesterday.

The three-month window for rural householders with a septic tank to receive the reduced registration fee of €5 would not begin until the system was in place, it said.

The scheme was originally due to be in place on March 31st, giving householders until the end of June to avail of the reduced fee. In late March the department said it would be in place by mid-April. Yesterday it announced a further delay.

In February Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan announced a dramatic reduction in the registration fee from € 50 to € 5 for those who registered early. Those registering after the three- month window will have to pay the €50 fee.
