The future of a music school attached to Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has been secured following a agreement reached between management and the Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) yesterday afternoon.

Strike action by 30 teachers at the school has now been called off following the agreement, which recognises that the institute "will provide for music education at all levels" and that the school will "continue to be part of the institute just as it is in Cork and Dublin", according to a TUI branch secretary, Mr Colm Long.

The dispute arose when increases in school fees and decreases in teacher numbers were proposed at the school, which has been in operation for 25 years.

At the meeting it was agreed that a task force will be established with a view to improving the situation going into the future.
