The first coronary ambulance to serve the west of Ireland was officially brought into service at University College Hospital, Galway, yesterday. The specialist ambulance, costing £90,000, was provided by Croi, the West of Ireland Cardiology Foundation.

The new, rapid response ambulance will serve 140,000 people in Galway City and the surrounding area.

Consultant cardiologist Dr Kieran Daly, said the service would significantly reduce deaths in the area from heart attack.
