The Galway city manager, Mr Joe Gavin, has been accused of failing to consult 30 members of corporation staff over proposals to privatise the waste collection service for the city.

Mr Gavin told a meeting of the local authority last week that a private-sector proposal for waste collection represented the best option.

The SIPTU branch secretary, Mr Michael Kilcoyne, claimed agreement had been reached on April 25th last that the corporation's staff would look after the service.
