Gardai in Galway are following a definite line of inquiry in their investigations into the death of Mrs Mary Kelehan (49), whose body was found in the city on Monday.

A full-scale murder hunt continued yesterday after the results of a post-mortem examination showed Mrs Kelehan was stabbed a number of times, possibly with a long-bladed serrated knife.

A team of 50 detectives and gardai searched for the murder weapon near her home at Cruachan Park, Rahoon, and examined the two-storey detached house.

Mrs Kelehan's body was discovered near the front door of the house on Monday afternoon, after friends who called to the house became concerned and raised the alarm.

The State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, carried out an initial investigation at the scene and the body was later taken to University College Hospital.

Supt Jim Sugrue, who is leading the investigation, said details of her injuries were being withheld for operational reasons. He appealed to members of the public who witnessed any unusual movements at or near the house last weekend to come forward. Mrs Kelehan was last seen alive on Friday evening.

The woman had been separated from her husband for several years and was involved in another relationship. She had four grown up children. She was described by neighbours as a quiet woman who kept to herself.

It is understood she sustained injuries in a recent dispute.

An incident room has been set up at Millstreet Garda station, telephone 091-564588, or confidential line 180 666 111.
