Cannabis resin, amphetamines and other substances with an estimated street value of £10,000 were seized in Arklow, Co Wicklow, by gardai over the weekend.

According to a Garda spokesman, four males and one female were arrested under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

They were being detained at various stations around Co Wicklow and could be held for up to seven days. Gardai in the town believe they may have smashed a drugs operation. The Saturday night operation involved plain clothes as well as uniformed gardai, and the cannabis resin and amphetamines were seized in the search of a house at Kilcarra, three miles outside Arklow.

Gardai, who had the house under surveillance for some time before the drug swoop, also took possession of £2,000 cash found in the house during the search, which was carried out with the aid of sniffer dogs at around 9.30 on Saturday night.
