A garda officer rescued a woman from the River Lee in Cork city in the early hours of this morning.

The woman had fallen into the Lee at Fr Matthew Quay just before 7 a.m. today. The alarm was raised and Garda Jim O'Donoghue was called to the scene, where he jumped into the river and pulled the woman to safety.

This is the second dramatic river rescue by a garda in as many days. Yesterday, 23-year-old student garda Colm Finnerty rescued three men from the River Liffey in Dublin.

Garda Finnerty is to be presented with a bravery award by the Irish Water Safety Orgnanisation.
