Gardai in Galway are appealing for witnesses to a fatal hit and run incident this morning.

The body of a man in his 60s was discovered at Drumgriffin, Corandulla, Co Galway at 8.50 am this morning.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and a post mortem examination will be carried out by the Deputy State pathologist this afternoon at University College Hospital Galway.

A female in her 30s has been arrested in relation to the incident and is being held at Galway garda station.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who was on the Lough George to Corandulla road beween 1am and 9am this morning to contact them on 091 538000.

Gardai would also like to speak to the female occupants of a BMW car that stopped at the scene of the crash and who contacted emergency services.

The road remains closed while a forensic examination of the crash site is carried out.
