Gardai assaulted in drink driving arrest

Several gardaí were assaulted earlier today while attempting to arrest a man over a road traffic incident in Galway.

Several gardaí were assaulted earlier today while attempting to arrest a man over a road traffic incident in Galway.

The man was stopped on suspicion of drink driving in the city centre shortly before 1.45am but refused to get out of his van, according to gardaí.

The van was later stopped on the upper Clybaun Road, Salthill and the man was arrested. He was later released without charge and a file is to be prepared on the matter.

The Garda said Several gardaí were assaulted during the course of the arrest but it is unclear whether any of them were injured.
