Gardai believe a row involving a number of people may have led to the murder of a man in the Inchicore area of Dublin yesterday.

The dead man, who suffered a number of injuries and had his throat cut, was found in the stairwell of an elderly people's maisonette complex in Jamestown Court, Jamestown Road, Inchicore, at about 5 a.m.

Gardai think a number of people witnessed the murder.

The victim was described as a local man in his mid-40s.

He had apparently been visiting a friend at the complex in the company of others.

A full-scale murder investigation has been opened.

Gardai are interviewing a number of witnesses and, while no arrests have been made, they are anxious to interview another individual.

They expect to spend the weekend conducting door-to-door inquiries in Inchicore and have appealed to anyone who was in the area, which is adjacent to the Naas Road junction, between midnight and 5 a.m. to come forward.

Supt John Mulderrig of Kilmainham Garda station is in charge of the investigation.

A spokesman said last night that gardai were satisfied of the need to talk to one further individual, whom they have identified and who they understand was at the scene of the murder.

"We are following a number of leads and we hope to be talking to this individual in the near future," said the spokesman, who added that it was too early in the investigation to say when an arrest could be expected.

The man's body was removed to the City Morgue where a post-mortem was carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy.

His name will not be released until relatives are informed.
