Gardaí confident of dead woman's identity

Gardaí at the scene of last night’s grim discovery of a body in a suitcase in the Royal Canal

Gardaí expect to name later today a woman whose body was found on steps beside the River Liffey this morning, a short distance from the Custom House building.

The woman was in her 40s, and formal identification was anticipated from members of her family.

Meanwhile, a murder investigation is under way after a body in a suitcase was taken from the Royal Canal last night at Binn's Bridge, Drumcondra, Dublin.

The large suitcase containing what was believed to be a man's body may have been in the water for "about three days", according to Supt Albert Treacy, from Fitzgibbon Street Garda station.

The man's hands were tied with twine but there were no signs of any wounds.

The results of a preliminary post-mortem examination today on the body indicated the man had died of head injuries.

The victim of the killing had still to be identified, but Gardaí issued a description, saying the man was in his early 30s and stockily built.

The body had been tied up with twine and was discovered last night by passers-by in a stretch of the Dublin Royal Canal not far from Croke Park.
