Gardai in Mayo are searching for a three-man gang which stole £5,000 in cash from an elderly businessman early yesterday. The masked gang broke into the home of Mr Tom Flatley and his sister Anne on the outskirts of Knock around 2 a.m. Mr Flatley, who is in his 70s, suffered extensive bleeding after being hit on the head during the attack. He did not require hospital treatment.
A special incident room has been set up in Knock Garda station. Supt Patrick Forde, in charge of the investigation, described the attack as "particularly brutal".
