Gardaí have named the two women who died last night in a three-car pile up outside Athlone.

They are Mihaela Ardeleanu (24), of Arden Road, Tullamore, Co Offaly, and Siobhan Drea (20) of Ballykilmurray, Tullamore, Co Offaly.

The two women were travelling in the same car, when the crash occurred at 6.30pm near Fardrum on the Dublin road outside the town.

Both bodies were taken to hospital in Ballinasloe, Co Galway. Emergency services spent several hours at the scene as gardaí diverted traffic.

Elsewhere, the man killed in two-vehicle collision near Virginia, Co Cavan, yesterday evening was named as Brian Connelly (56), from Old Bawn, Tallaght, Dublin. Mr Connelly was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Gardaí have also named the woman (26) who died when her bicycle hit a truck in Dublin city centre on Saturday. Katarzyna Stanczyk, a Polish national, died at the junction of North King Street and Blackhall Place in Stoneybatter.

Twenty people have died on the State's roads so far this year, compared to 19 for the same period last year. In 2005, 399 people lost their lives in crashes, the highest annual total since 2001.
