A post-mortem examination, carried out by the State Pathologist Dr John Harbison, confirmed that Mr Doyle died from gunshot wounds.

A garda spokesman said the victim was shot on his driveway at St Mark's Avenue, Clondalkin, but struggled across the road to a grass area where he collapsed.

Mr Doyle was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Tallaght Hospital where he died.

It is thought the gunman hid behind a tree before opening fire, garadaí said.
