In Navan, Co Meath, gardai have appealed for witnesses to the theft of £8,000 as it was about to be lodged in the AIB night safe at Market Square around 2.30 a.m. last Friday. During the robbery two masked men, one armed with an iron bar, assaulted a security guard from the Beechmount Hotel as he and the hotel owner went to lodge the night's takings.

Gardai believe a Dublin gang with local knowledge was responsible. They have asked for anyone with information to contact them on 046-21445 or the Garda confidential phone line.
