Gardaí in Galway are investigating the discovery of human remains, which were found in separate locations in the city yesterday evening, writes Lorna Siggins. The remains comprise a skull and a torso.
Identification is expected to take several days, but it is believed the body may date back two to three years.
The discovery was made in a house in the nightclub area of the suburb, and was reported to gardaí. Mr Henry Greally, a Salthill businessman, found the skull during machinery work behind a house close to his nightclub premises, currently leased to Angels Lap Dancing Club.
Rubble from the work was being disposed of on land in Claregalway. Mr Greally sifted through that material and found the torso.
The torso was contained in a sleeping bag secured by a nylon rope. Size-10 mountain boots were found with it. It is believed that the body has been buried in a makeshift grave in the rear garden of the Salthill premises, possibly within the last two to three years.
The State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, is expected to carry out an initial examination of the remains today.
