Gardaí in Loughrea, Co Galway, have said they are still trying to establish the whereabouts of Independent councillor Michael "Stroke" Fahy, who is due to serve a one-year jail term for fraud and attempted theft.
A Garda spokesman said yesterday the warrant in relation to his arrest was "live" but the station had no idea of his whereabouts. "We are actively trying to locate him," the spokesman said, adding that contact had been made through Fahy's legal representatives.
Reports that Fahy is now in respite care since his discharge from hospital on Monday could not be confirmed, but it is understood that gardaí expect they will hear from the councillor as soon as he is well enough to report in.
Fahy (56) was discharged from University College Hospital Galway on Monday after an operation last week to insert a stent into an artery.
He was admitted to hospital on April 2nd, the evening before he was due to present himself at Loughrea Garda station for surrender into custody after his conviction last month.
The former Fianna Fáil councillor was given a 12-month jail sentence and fined €75,000 for fraud and attempted theft from Galway County Council.
