Gardaí not wearing identification numbers on their uniforms are in breach of the Garda Síochána dress code, a Garda spokesman has told ireland.com.
Hats must also be worn by gardaí while on duty.
The issue arose following yesterday’s "Reclaim the Streets" rally where some gardaí were accused of not wearing their identification numbers during clashes with protesters.
However, the Garda press office spokesman said some gardaí do not wear identification numbers under their jackets if their jackets are already displaying the numbers because of the discomfort of wearing two sets of badges on the shoulders.
Also, gardaí who are on a break might be called to a scene or incident at short notice and may not have the time to ensure their uniform is regulation standard, the spokesman said.
Media images from yesterday’s rally show gardaí without identification numbers, hats and jackets. It will be a matter for these gardaí to explain the reasons for this to their superiors, the Garda spokesman said.
