One of the best things you can do for your own garden is to get out and visit other gardens to look at plants, plant combinations and how other gardeners deal with such problems as rocks, deep shade, dry or damp soil etc. Take a notebook and camera (but ask first if it's okay to use the latter). Don't be afraid to ask questions, lots of them.
Meanwhile, back at home when you are weeding (a bout of weeding always follows a garden visit) look out for seedlings that have popped up around their parent plants. If they are in the wrong place and you want to save them for friends or plant sales, carefully dig them up, pot them and stand them somewhere sheltered and warm, but not too sunny (a lightly-shaded cold frame, greenhouse or porch is ideal) for a couple of weeks.
